Rookie group Block B has recently returned with their oddlytitled second singe, “Nalina.” Now, rookie groups usually take a while toreally fall into place, and some never actually do. Black B’s debut mini albumspawned three singles, and none of them were really anything special. However…BlockB’s comeback shows tons of improvement, and if their recent “All Kill” is anyindicator, “Nalina” is pretty awesome.

So what exactly does "Narina" mean? Whats up with the random "Goo goo ga ga" thrown into the bridge? Well...nobody seems to know, but Kpop seems to be ok with nonesense lyrics that make no sense. Case in point, Co-Ed's "Bbirribom Bberribom," Narsha's "Bi Ri Ba Ba" and practically every song from T-ara.

“Nalina” is a strong hip-hop song with an addictive electronicbeat. It’s the perfect type of song to be played in a club. Between the heavybeat that just begs you to dance, Block B has an energy unlike most other idolgroup. While other groups seem to be more about their image, their choreography,or whatever else…Block B seems to be having a blast by just making music andperforming. Their music is all about fun and having a great time, and it reallyshows through in this song.

And how could you not have fun while you’re dancing aroundlike a gorilla? At first, I thought that the gorilla-arm jackets were just afashion statement, but then I saw the choreography. With all of the chestscratching and arm waving, it does seem like the Block is indeed channelingtheir inner animals. Although it might seem a little strange, it actually goesalong with the feel of the song really well. The only thing I didn’t get aboutthe choreography was the crotch fanning.

The group’s lead rapper is clearly the star of this song,and it’s easy to see why. He’s a fantastic rapper, and brings tons of swag and attitudeto this song. Co-Staring is the group’s second rapper, P.O., who has a much raspierand gruff rapping voice which adds color to the song. The other members aremore or less pushed into the background and given much smaller parts, which isok, because their anchor members definitely shine in the spotlight.

Overall, “Nalina” is a very strong comeback for this rookiegroup. In fact, it may have converted me into a fan! They definitely are apromising group, and “Nalina” is a welcome addition to my playlist. Great job,Block B!

SPICA - Russian Roulette

SPICA is the newest girl group on the scene, and they’verecently made their official debut with the release of their first single, “RussianRoulette.” As the name of their song implies, they’ve decided to against thecute ageyo image, and say “no thank you” to the electronic dance music adoptedby other groups with more mature concepts. So…if this group rejected both ofthe lanes which kpop music usually falls into, what exactly does that leave uswith? The answer would be something refreshing and original.

“Russian Roulette” is a unique pop-rnb track that features afunky beat, a whistling hook, and some rock guitars just for flavor. It’s a verydistinctive sound, and for a first track, I feel like the girls’ haveeffectively put a stamp on their own image.

Not what I had in mind for a Girls' night...

The song puts thevocal capabilities of the five ladies on full display. Once again, breaking therules followed by most other groups, SPICA doesn’t assign one member to be incharge of the more difficult vocal parts. Instead, each of the four vocalists isfully capable of carrying a song with their powerful voices. Even the rapper isgreat at what she does! However, SPICA shines brightest when they harmonizetogether. It’s kind of like when the Power Rangers form the Megazord…powerfulindividually, but unstoppable together.

One area that they could use a little work is the choreography.The song begins and ends with some very awkward and unconvincing booty shaking.The rest of the performance is relatively low key, but I believe that’s probablyto allow the girls to really focus on delivering a flawless vocal performance.The girls do seem to emote well, which as something that often seems roboticand forced in other groups. Overall, the girls are much better singers thanthey are dancers, and I’m perfectly OK with that.

SPICA is one of the most impressive debuts I’ve seen lately…easily the best girl group to debut since Miss A. “Russian Roulette” is a unique trackthat shows off their talents, as well as their own distinct flavor. Personally,I can’t wait to see how this group continues to grow. I’m expecting greatthings from SPICA.

Madonna - Gimme All Your Luvin'

Madonna may very well be the most iconic singer alive. Witha vast number of hits behind her, nobody would blame her for sitting back andcollecting the royalty checks. However, she’s on the verge of pop dominationonce again with her first release since 2005’s “Hung Up.” The new track iscalled “Gimme All You Love,” and features two of my favorite female rappers(the only female rappers?) M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj.

The song features a bouncy bubblegum pop beat, and acheerleading chant hook that seems to harken back to the radio hits of the 80’sand early 90’s more so than anything popular this decade. It’s something that couldactually be refreshing and new if it wasn’t being delivered by an androidsinging into a tin can. Seriously, Madonna does absolutely nothing with the popbeats before her. Her voice is clearly not strong enough to carry the song. Asa result, her limited range lyrics as so heavily filtered and autotuned that itseems to lose any emotion at all.

Lyrics like “I see you commin’ and I don’t wanna know yourname” should be delivered with some amount of attitude and swag. Hell, I caneven imagine a 1992 Madonna singing these lyrics like a total badass. Thechorus leaves you flat out cold with no build up, and no impact. Instead, whatshould hit you like Jet Li feels more like a feather landing on your nose. Ittickles a bit, but then it’s gone.

The only time the song goes any place is when Nicki andM.I.A. come out to play. Nicki goes first in her usually frantic rapping style,using as many voices and spitting out as many words in 13 seconds as humanlypossible. Seriously? That’s all she gets? 13 seconds? Whatever. Its still thebest 13 seconds of the song.

M.I.A. is completely out of place in this bubblegum popsong, and it clearly shows. When it’s her turn to rap, the beat drops andbecomes noticeably more hip-hop friendly, but it’s still a total mismatch forthe grime rapper. She tries to get political with lyrics about Iran andcensoring her profanity with a gun shot, but in the end, it just seems sorandom when compared to the rest of the song.

But is it catchy? Well, the beat is infectious enough. Thecheerleading chant that runs throughout the song is both annoying and the onlyreal hook. So…yeah, why not? The song is catchy. Not really danceable, butcatchy enough.

In the end, this song doesn’t do any favors for anyone inthe party. Madonna’s edge has completely gone, and without the A-listproduction crew behind her, she’s nothing more than a hot bod and a mediocrevoice. Nicki is far too underutilized, and M.I.A. is totally out of place. Sure,the song is catchy, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good. In fact, withoutthat…it’s quite lame.

Nine Muses - News

After taking a short break following their “Figaro” success,Nine Muses has returned with a new single, and a new member…making them EightMuses, but numbers are irrelevant at this point. “News” is the third singlefrom this group of lovelies, and shows a much more distinctive sound and image.

When they originally debuted with “No Playboy”, Nine Muses broughta good song, and little else. Their singing was mediocre, dancing was sub-par,and they were terribly uncoordinated; a fact which can be seen even in theirown music video. However, the beat was catchy, and they were kinda hot, so…therewas that.

It was evident from “Figaro” that the girls were showinggreat improvements, but “News” is the first song that really distinguishes NineMuses’ identity. Decked out in elegant, yet sexy outfits, the girls carrythemselves with a confidence and poise that sets them apart from other groupsusing the same concept. For the first time, the group’s image feels distinctiveof “Nine Muses” and represents them rather than a trend being used by “somerookie group.”

As a song, “News” attempts to evoke the same feelings that acelebrity feels about living in front of the camera, and living on display forthe public. It features a unique and addictive electronic beat that has thesame “runway” feel of their debut song, but with a more mysterious air aboutit.

Vocally, the girls have shown dramatic improvement. They’veshown the ability to harmonize better than most other idol groups.Individually, they also shine just as bright. The song heavily features rappersSaem and Euaerin, and although they’re far from the best, they do well enoughwithout looking amateur. Sera and Hyemi leadthe pack in terms of vocal ability, but the newest members, Hyuna and Kyung Lishow amazing potential, and act as if they’ve been with the group since dayone. The group has also been shiningg on stage, where they’ve made little useof backtracking or lip syncing, and have consistently given solid liveperformances!

The choreography is also another fantastic improvement. Thedance features a dynamic combination of elaborate movements, sexy body rolls,and eye catching formations. Although it lacks that “signature move” that helpsa song achieve popularity, Nine Muses signature in their ability to dance insync. Each of the girls is in tune with the other seven in a way that puts eventhe most established groups to shame. Looking at their debut performances, Inever thought I would be giving this compliment to Nine Muses! They’ve quicklygone from THE worst, to one of the best groups in terms of dancing in sync.

The music video really takes the song’s concept of “livingin front of the camera” and runs with it. In several scenes, we see the girlsseductively posing in front of what looks like a giant camera lens. In manyother scenes, we see the ladies in a small glass box, creating the feeling ofbeing “boxed in.” The video also heavily uses mirrors and really shaky close upshots. It’s all very interesting and eye catching, but at times it almost seemslike too much happening at once. It does create a very claustrophobic feelingfor the viewer, which accomplishes its goal in the most uncomfortable wayimaginable. Also, I feel like the choreography was underutilized, and I wouldhave loved to see more shots of the group as a whole.

Overall, this is by far Nine Muses best song to date. “News”has a unique concept that finally establishes Nine Muses’ identity and uniqueflavor. Additionally, the improvements they have made in terms of performanceshas been nothing short of incredible. What once promised to be a hot mess oftalentless “pretty girls” has since become a promising young group with a verybright future ahead of them.

Review: B.A.P. - Warrior

I always look forward to watching a rookie group debut. It’sinteresting to see how they begin their career, figure out the group dynamics,and then see how they proceed to grow and improve. 2012 promised to bring somehighly anticipated rookie groups, and B.A.P. is one of the first to strike.They recently released their first single entitled “Warrior” and have madequite an impression!

Let me start off by saying this…B.A.P. have had the bestdebut since Miss A. There isn’t a spec of “rookie” anywhere on these guys! They’vechose a tough concept to debut with, and they do it exceptionally well. As thename “Warrior” would imply, these guys chose to go hard with a rebellious, angry,street punk bad ass concept. It’s a style that we don’t usually see because guygroups usually go for a sexy, overly made up image, or worse…ageyo *shudders*. Typically,when a guy group tries to make themselves look “bad ass,” they wind up failingmiserably.

Granted, in some of the scenes from the MV, I wonder if theymay be trying too hard to convince us of their “ruggedness.” I find that while fire,the car smashing, and the skulls fit the vibe of the video well enough, it wasall a bit overwhelming, and a bit…much.

Warrior! HUH!

The music video is set in a grimy, dirty urban back alleyfull of graffiti, broken glass, and broken cars and of course, human skulls. There’s also DJ with a giant bunny headrunning around in the video serving as a blatant rip off of Deadmou5. Now, formost other groups out right now, this would seem totally unconvincing…but notfor this group!

Deadmou5? Is that you?

Normally, I hate when a music video is nothing more than ablatant display of the choreography. However, B.A.P.’s dancing ability is topnotch! It’s full of very intense and elaborate hip-hop moves that add to the rebelliousfeel of the song. We have some wild fist throwing, finger gun shooting, Zeloplaying puppet master with the other 5 members, and an extremely well-choreographedstomping breakdown. Quite frankly, it’s some of the best choreography I’ve seenin Kpop, especially the ending where they *spoiler alert* shoot Zelo in thehead. Yep…do any other groups have an execution in their choreography? Didn’tthink so.

Now, I haven’t spoken about the actual song yet. At first,while I liked it, I didn’t love it. However…that changed after the second andthird listen. First of all, the song features some heavy hip-hop beats, akiller bass, and some whistle blowing that adds some nice flavor. Overall, thebeat is enough to get stuck in your head, but it’s the vocals that really sellit.

The six members of B.A.P. get to show off some exceptional talenton this song. One of my biggest peeves in Kpop is when songs feature unnecessaryrapping by sub-par rappers. I’m very happy to say that Zelo and Bang are on topof the competition in terms of rapping. Zelo can spit rhymes like a pro, with aflow and an energy that is reminiscent of some of the best American rappers.Bang reminds me a bit of T.O.P. with his deep and husky voice. It soundsabsolutely fantastic, and really stands out for the unique tone. The other membersall show off promising vocal capabilities, especially DaeHyun, who is a vocalpowerhouse.

So, can I find something to be critical of? Well, Deadmou5rip off, sometimes their aggressive image comes off as a bit much, and I don’tlike Zelo’s hair. Am I nit picking? Absolutely. These guys are solid, and thissong is awesome!

They’re rookies? No way. I don’t believe it at all. I refuseto believe it. This is a top notch group that shows amazing potential with their debut single.

My only hope is that they never, ever, ever decide to turnon the charm and go “cutie boy” like every other idol group. Also, I hope thatthey haven’t released their best right out of the gate. It’s going to be hardto top this song, but with the talent they have…I have full faith that they cando it! B.A.P. is going to be the name on everyone’s mind in 2012.

Review: M.I.A. - Bad Girls

I’ve been a fan of Sir Lankan rapper M.I.A. since thebeginnings of her career. I discovered her through “Sunshowers,” got my faceblown off by “Bucky Done Gun,” got infected by the “Bird Flu” and then saw herexplode onto the scene with “Paper Planes.” However, despite the catchiness of “Xxxo,”her last album was by far her weakest deliverance, and I’ve got to say in allhonesty…I just couldn’t get into it.

Luckily, M.I.A. has broken her brief silence with her latestrelease, “Bad Girls.” At first listen, it appears that she has toned down the experimental“electronic noise” of her previous album, and gone in a more radio friendlydirection. The song’s beat is simply brilliant, and represents what she doesbest. Its a strait up, grimy, in your face hip-hop beat mixed in with an exoticIndian melody which gives the song a unique flavor that only M.I.A. can pulloff.

Lyrically, M.I.A. has traded in her usually profound andprovocative political lyrics in the name of swag and catchiness. Is it sellingout and going “pop?” Maybe a bit, but even at her most mainstream, M.I.A. isstill more authentic than a good majority of the rest of the hip-hop game. Thechorus sings “Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well” which would feelshallow if sung by anyone else.

The song’s hook is pulled off with shockingly goodprecision. She aims to kill with her chants of “My chain hits my chest when I’mbanging on the dashboard! My chain hits my chest when I’m banging on the radio!”All of it is delivered with the swag and lyrical flow that makes M.I.A. such abad ass. Although this may be one of her most mainstream ventures since “PaperPlanes,” it’s still a completely brilliant and original track that teases bigthings for her next album.

Review: Girls' Generation - The Boys (Eng. Version)

With the Wonder Girls’ making their debut in just a fewdays, I find it both odd and a little exciting that Korea’s other top girlgroup is making their television debut as well. That’s right, Girls’ Generationhas officially arrived in the States with the English version of "The Boys!"

With “The Boys,” Girls’ Generation tried for a more maturestyle by channeling their “Run Devil, Run” days. However, this time, they gotrid of the matching black cat suits, and instead chose some very elegant andchic looking ensembles. It’s the perfect blend of sexy and classy in my opinion.

There simply aren’t any words to describe how stunning theseladies look in the video’s intro. We see thegirls in a dream-like setting, looking super elegant and simplyshining with grace and beauty. Their beauty is complimented by a powerful and mysterious beat that honestly leaves mespeechless. Between the 360 rotating camera work, rose petals raining from the sky,and doves flying in slow motion, It’s a stunning display of class and regalbeauty.

Just be careful with that dove ladies...we wouldn't
want to get anything on those dresses.

Then the beat drops, and things start going downhill.

The video itself is quite lame. For a song that boasts theability to “bring the boys out,” we see a complete and total lack of boys. Infact, other than the nine ladies, there isn’t any other human life to be seen. Itseems like a terrible decision to have the girls dancing…alone…in the arctic.This video would have been much more effective in a club scene, or anywhereelse on the god damn planet for that matter. But the song is good, right?

First things first; hows their English? I'm happy to say its not bad. Their accents are barely noticable, and the pronounciation is quite good! Lyrically, the song makes sense for the most part. Although some lines seem terribly random, and the song's bridge lacks coherence, overall, its not bad.

Hwever, I’ve come to expect big things from Asia’s number one girlgroup. This song promises to roar like a fierce lioness, but ultimately ends uppurring like a kitten. “The Boys” features a hip-pop, urban dance beat thattries to “go hard.” The problem is that it doesn’t go nearly hard enough. It lacksthe intensity and catchiness that it needs to really sell the song, and as aresult, the outcome in is unconvincing. It doesn’t seem ready for the clubdancefloor or radio airwaves by US standards.

Girls bring the Boys Out!

However, the song really suffers from its terrible structure. Theladies of Girls’ Generation possess an incredible amount of vocaltalent. However, rather than showcase that, we instead see them rapping. Yes…Girls’Generation is attempting to rap. The chorus is a mix of chanting and rappingwhich rings hollow when the song should be at its peak.

It’s kind of likewatching Hyuna try to sing a ballad, which is to say that it’s just not goingto work by any stretch of the imagination. They lack the lyrical flow,intensity, and the attitude needed to rap convincingly, and it just comesacross as amateurish.

Do you see theproblem? Girls’ Generation is anything BUT amateur! This song really undercutstheir talents, and highlights their weaknesses, which is something I blameentirely on Teddy Reily.

Yuri: Keep dancing Girls! We'll get a boy here soon enough!

Now, it’s not all bad. The song’s choreography is fierce andpowerful, and the girls pull it off with finesse, grace, and poise. At the song’srap breakdown, the girls break into a well-choreographed display of hip-hopmoves that finally brings the intensity that the song needed.

The end of the song also builds into what sounds like a realchorus which flourishes into the melody that was missing all along. It alsofeatures Jessica and Tae Yeon belting it out like they’re supposed to, whichsounds simply fantastic. In fact, there have been a number of remixes whichreplace the song’s actual chorus with this part of the song…which makes mewonder what exactly Teddy was trying to do?

I know I'm going to get some hate for this, but hear me out Sones! I'm actually a fan of SNSD, but I have to admit that this song was a huge disappointment, and I realize that many others simply don't share my opinion.

Girls’ Generation has some insane talent,but this song really doesn’t show it off. With a beat that doesn’t quite “bring it,” andwithout any real chorus, the song seems to lack the edge that the girls weretrying to display. I really wish that they had decided to release an Englishversion of “Run Devil Run” instead, because that song is much more accessible tothe American public.

SNSD has a massive following in Korea, where they canseemingly do no wrong. That’s fantastic, but if they want to bring the Hallyuwave to the US, I'm afriad that they’re going to have to bring something a bitstronger than “The Boys.”

Review: Wonder Girls - The DJ is Mine

Sorry, I don’t know why I felt compelled to say that beforereviewing a Wonder Girls song.

So, the Wonder Girls’ are one of Korea’s top stars. Theykind of revolutionized the music industry with hits like “Tell Me” and “Nobody,”and were even able to find some success when they brought their catchy song andchoreography to the US as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers. Now, theyhave plans for a full scale attack on American soil. Teen Nick movie, album,tour…these girls are going all out trying to bring the Hallyu wave to USshores.

Their debut US song is called “The DJ is Mine,” anddefinitely shows that the girls have tried to adapt to the new market. The songfeatures “rival group” the School Gyrls, like the film which premieres Feb 8^thon Teen Nick.

The Song: Thesong begin with a dubstep inspired intro that once again shows the girlshopping on current trends, and at the same time, beating other pop acts to thepunch. The intro is infectious, using samples from old school Nintendo foradded flavor. It starts the song off on the right foot before launching into ahigh intensity sing off between the two girl groups as they fight for theaffection of, you guessed it, the DJ!

“Because the DJ is mine, and girl you’re wasting your time!”The Wonder Girls have definitely caught onto the American mentality. Suchlyrics are almost unheard of in their homeland. They simply couldn’t resistusing tons of musical imagery to win over the DJ. Lyrics like “He holds me fromintro to fade” “He only rocks to my music” and “I’m what he’s listening to, I’mblasting through his head phones” are both intelligent, and terribly cheesey.

to figure out what you're saying.

The two groups take turns in the spotlight, whichpersonally, I think is an absolutely terrible idea. The Wonder Girls still havesome Engrish tendencies, so putting a native girl group next to them reallyexposes their accents. Plus, it takes the attention away from the stars.

So Hee takes the first verse, but her sugary sweet tone is muchbetter in small doses. It really opens her up to comparisons to Lauren, whosevocals are much stronger. Lim and Monica do equally well in the bridges, butYenny and Sun definitely trump Natalie and Rae on the courses. The rap battlebetween Yu Bin and Sade is a fierce one, and in my opinion, it’s the highlightof the song.

The Style: Thegirls have definitely undergone a change is styles. Departing from theirusually cute and retro style, they’ve decked themselves out in chic neoncolored club ware for a more current and trendy look. The thing is,individually, the outfits look a little strange. Between Lim’s poncho, Yenny’s ill-fittinglime green dress, and Sun’s football player shoulder pads, the girls look a bit…off.The good news is, Yu Bin and So Hee look simply stunning in their get ups, andwhen you put all five together, the concept somehow seems to make sense.

Girls...it's Morphin' Time!

I actually really like the idea of putting the girls incolor coded outfits. While making thier debut to a new audience, theyhave to both stand out as a group, as well as individuals. Theseoutfits make it much easier for the audience to pick a favorite. I’ve seenmany comments saying “Who’s the girl in blue? She’s my favorite” “The girl inred is really hot!” “I like the one in Green.” Yes, they do look like pop starPower Rangers, but getting recognition is a start. My only concern is that theUS audience might demand something sexier and more outrageous from these girls.

The Dance: TheWonder Girls have a tendency to use their choreography as a form of signlanguage in their songs. “The DJ is Mine” is no exception, and containseverything from record spinning to the word “DJ” and devil horns to the lyrics “he rocksto my music.” It still fun and catchy, but it definitely feels less inspiredthan their past songs.

The Video: In thevideo, we see a typical dance off between the two groups, mixed in with scenesfrom the film the song promotes. The Wonder Girls find themselves in a newclub, and Yenny makes pretty eyes with the club DJ. Unfortunately, they seem tohave stepped onto Schoo Gyrl territory, as a dance off soon ensues. The rest of thevideo serves its purpose…tease the movie and show off the choreography.

My biggest complaint about this video is the lighting. Iknow it can be difficult to get 10 girls in the same shot, but when you canonly see 2 out of the 6 on screen…something is wrong. There are points in thevideo where you can’t even see the full effect of the choreography because thelighting is so bad. This should be a minor complaint, but I really feel that itinterferes with the overall quality of the video, and personally, I can’t believethat JYP let this one slide right past him.

Quick! How many girls are in this shot?

I was really hoping that this song would be a knock out, andwhile it is still a very strong debut, I can’t help but be disappointed by afew things. Featuring the School Gyrls in the video is fine, but this songreally should have been all about the Wonder Girls. Also, little things likethe concept and cerography (and the lighting), could have been improved upon.Now, don’t get me wrong…I realize that I’m being quite critical. I just want tosee these girls make waves in the US.

“The DJ is Mine” is still good for some dance floor fun. Thegirls have adapted to a new sound and style of music quite well, and I reallydo believe that this song can make on the US charts. These five girls posess alevel of talent that is rarely found in America, and I know they can becomestars if they can just figure out how best to market themselves to a newaudience. Not an easy task by any means, but if anyone can do it…it’s the WonderGirls.

Review: Dal Shabet - Hit U

Dal Shabet – Hit U

Yesterday, rookie girl group Dal Shabet made a comeback withtheir new song “Hit U.” With this new song, the girls traded in their usual upbeat,ageyo style for a more powerful, gun toting, boyfriend murdering “Bad girl”image.

I can’t say that I’ve ever been a fan of this group, but I’venever been a hater either. “Supa Dupa Diva” was a great, super catchy debut,but the overload of cuteness on “Pink Rocket” and “Bling Bling” just weren’t mycup o’ tea. When the teasers for “Hit U” were released, I was very interestedto see how this group, whose name translates to “Sweet Sherbet,” would fairewith this darker concept.

The Concept: Turnsout, the girls wear black and murder people quite convincingly. The concept ismuch more chic, powerful, and darker than anything they’ve done before. Italmost seems like a totally different group. It’s quite refreshing, and showsthat the girls are capable of adapting to different styles. My only concern isthat this new concept is SUCH a radical departure from what I’ve come to knowas “Dal Shabet” that I don’t know if it’s helping this relatively new groupestablish their identity.

The Video: Thismusic video takes the “Bad Girl” image to the extreme. In fact, I’m countingdown the minutes until it gets hit with MOGEF’s ban hammer. How do you bestdestroy your cutsey disco concept? Put on some black stalkings, and shoot yourboyfriend and all his friends at point blank range! Yay!

In the video, we see Jiyul playing the part of anemotionally abused lover. Who decides that she’s had enough. In one scene, sheaims her guns at a group of her boyfriend’s friends. They laugh, and one eventries to get her to put her gun down. Silly boy, never mess with a scornedwoman…at least not when she’s packing! She pops one right in his chest, and continuesto unload on the rest of the group, eventually leading up to a tender momentwith her boyfriend that ends with yet another bullet in the chest.

However…my question is…why is everyone bleeding pink blood?At first, I thought “maybe she’s shooting them with paintballs?” However, theysure don’t look like they were hit by paint balls. I’ve been hit by paintballs.They don’t hurt THAT bad, nor do they blow holes in your chest. Those guys areclearly dead. My guess is that it was done for the censure, but listen girls; you’rekilling people. You WILL be banned, so you might as well go all out, right?

The Dance: Whatcan be said for the choreography? It’s your standard faire Kpop choreography. It’scrisp, clean, and the ladies pull it off relatively well. It goes well with thesong, but I was always waiting for that signature move that would really stickout, and it never really came. It’s not a bad dance, but it isn’t particularlymemorable either.

The Song: Likethe video, this is your standard “bad girl” pop song. In fact, it would seem abit generic if it weren’t for a few things. Personally, I love the electricguitars that run throughout the song, which give it a cool yet powrful sound. Thesong makes great use of all six member’s unique voices and tones, which keepsthe song from becoming stagnant. However, the chorus and rap breakdown lack thesame amount of power that’s suggested throughout the rest of the song.

Final Score: 3/5

Overall, “Hit U” is a catchy song, that shows off a new sideof Dal Shabet. The girls tried to show adarker, "Bad Girl" image, and they came out with guns blazing…literally. They handle the new concept well enough, but at times, they seem a little lost, either overdoing it, or under selling it. Overall, while they still have some things towork out, the song, dance and video all come together well enough. It’s a decentcomeback that shows the girls exploring new territories, which will hopefullylead to something that really sets them apart from the rest in the future.

And so, as we welcome 2012, the first ever Dervis's Awesome Music Awards omes to a close! Personally, I find it quite enjoyabe to look back at all of my favorite tracksof the past year, make lists, comparisons and whatnot, so in that respect, I feel like this has been a success! Granted, this whole "blog awards" disasterpiece had some shortcommings, but I'll be looking for ways o improve on these for the 2012 D.A.M.N. awards!

Also, because I created this blog with the intention of experimenting, and letting it take shape and evolve as I figured out which direction I wanted to take it in, I'd like to announce the third stage of this blog! Each year, my playlist continues to grow and expand,incorporating more and more new artists. Also, there’s something kind of sweetin being able to find a new artist and become a fan before everyone else. Thatway, when they release their second album and “Rolling in the Deep” iseverywhere, you can always say “Yeah…I was a fan of her before this song waspopular.” That right Adele…I was a fan of yours back when Hometown Glory wasbarely receiving airplay. And M.I.A? Galang. That is all.

Being honest…2011 wasn’t a huge hit for debut artists. Overall,it was a much weaker year than the past two have been. However, that’s not tosay that there haven’t been some true gems put out this year. In fact, of thedebuts we did have…choosing only 5 was quite difficult. In my opinion, the language of music is universal. Goodmusic is good music regardless of language. Plain and simple. Something hasalways fascinated me the about Korean pop scene. I’ve been into Kpop since2004, back when Baby VOX was still the top girl group, BoA was the reigningqueen, and Super Junior was still just an idea in SM’s mind. My, how this genrehas evolved.

2011 saw the beginning of the Hallyu wave spreading evenfurther than Asia. We saw Kpop go viral with Hyuna, and with US debuts coming fromthe Wonder Girls, 2NE1, Girls’ Generation, JQT, and possibly more, it’s clearthat Kpop has found a universal audience. With catchy songs, incredible voices,fierce dance moves, and tons of charm, swag, and yes, sex appeal, is it anywonder that the Hallyu Wave is being led by the ladies?

Back at the dawn of the new millennium, I hear a little songcalled “One More Time,” and it completely changed the way I listened to music. Suddenly,I was exploring the world of techno, house, electronica music thanks to DaftPunk’s infectious hit. This new type of music quickly became my one of myfavorite genres.

I’m happy to say that 2011 has been a very good year forelectronic music and each of its sub-genres. In the past year, we’ve seendubstep simply explode in terms of popularity, and I honestly feel that 2012will be the year that it becomes mainstreamed (for better or worse.) Granted,we had some very talented DJ’s sell out and try to go pop, (I’m looking at youTiesto, Guetta…) but in the end, the amount of solid tracks to come out of thisyear more than makes up for it.

2010 was the year that started the three way marriagebetween hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. For a while, I didn’t know how tofeel about this mutant lovechild, but in my opinion, 2012 was a great year forthis evolution of pop music. It finally began to take on an identity of its ownthrough collaborations with DJ’s, and a great combination of strong vocals,heavy electronic beats, and hip-hop swag. Great soul music is a sound that is simply timeless, I mustadmit to being slightly disgusted with the genre’s evolution into today’scontemporary RnB music. I feel that much of the “soul” died out in the 90’s,and todays industry relies solely on synth beats, catchy hooks, collaborationswith rappers, and of course, inappropriate and soulless lyrics about babymaking.

Now, because I must admit that I flip flopped betweenRaphael and Fitz and the Tantrums multiple times. However, between these twosongs, I’m going to have to go with Mr. Saadiq and “Stone Rollin’.” Now, ifthis was a contest between “Stone Rolling” and “Breaking the Chains of Love”like I had originally intended, I would have had to have given it to Mr. Fitzand all of his Tantrums. Unfortunately, “Breaking the Chains of Love” wasreleased in 2010, therefore disqualifying it. Regardless, Raphael Saadiq is aworthy musician who deserves much more recognition by the media, as do all ofthese great artists!

Best Indie Rock Song of 2011

This next category is for the bands that rock just as hardas the bands in the last category, but with a distinctly different style. Indierock has had a huge year in 2011, with several excellent bands breaking out intothe mainstream. Personally, this is one of my favorite categories because Ibelieve that the artists in this particular genre are allowed to express theirown artistic style, as well as create much more unique sounds. 2011 was a huge year for rock music. We saw some hugereleases from some incredible bands, as well as a great comeback or two. Infact, this category was one of the toughest from me to decide on, and the onein which most of my personal bias will be coming out. Oh well. It’s my blog!

After looking at the nominees, I realized that I had chosenfive very different bands. However, each one created in my opinion, anexcellent rock track. Let’s take a look at them shall we?

Dropkick Murphys – Going Out In Style

Fist up, we have the Dropkick Murphys with their Celtic-Punkstyle ballad. This album had a brilliant concept, and the lead single was anintense track that showcased said brilliance.

Foo Fighters – Rope

The Foo Fighters are practically rock royalty, and theircomeback album proved that they have no intentions of slowing down any timesoon. Rope ranks among their best work.

Radiohead – Loutus Flower

Radiohead also made a comeback with The King of Limbs. Itproved to be an experimental album, with ambient sounds and a more abstractconcept. It wasn’t for everyone, but I dug it.

Red – Lie to Me (Denial)

Red released a killer album with Until We Have Faces, butLie to Me was undoubtedly it’s the best song.

Yellowcard – For You and Your Denial

After taking a hiatus, Yellowcard returned with an excellentpop-punk release. You and Your Denial was a strong track that made me wonderwhy this band is so under rated.

And with all of that said…I have to give the award for BestDamn Rock Song of 2011 to…

I fist found this band on VH1, and was simply blown away with the dark and haunting simplicity of their music.

I discovered the Decemberists with their latest album, which left me to wonder why I haven’t heard of them before. “This is Why We Fight” was my favorite song off of The King is Dead.

Feist – How Come You Never Go There?

I’ve been a fan of Feist for awhile, and I was ecstatic to see her return from her ipod fame to deliver yet another solid album.

G-Love and Special Sauce – Fixin’ to Die

I discovered this band with their 2011 release, and was blown away with their ability to mix genres, and deliver a truly original sound.

Keb’ Mo –The Whole Enchilada

The Blues legend delivered his 8^th studio album with an updated sound. In my opinion, it worked, and showcased his amazing talent in a new light, with The Whole Enchilada being a worthy lead single.

Train – If It’s Love

Finally, Train had a massive hit with “Hey Soul Sister,” butin my opinion, it was “If It’s Love” that was the highlight of their latestalbum.

Introducing the Dervis's Awesome Music Nominee Awards!

As 2011 comes to a close, all of the popular magazines are looking back at 2011, and making lists of the greatest everything to happen this year. Various award shows are making nominations and counting votes. Blogs everywhere are posting their own lists like people will actuall read them, and this year, I am no different!

Ladies and gentlemen, announcing my first ever year-end awards…Dervis’s Awesome Music Nominee Awards….or as I like to call them, The D.A.M.N Awards!

So what does this all mean? Who decides the winners?

I do.

Am I qualified to assess music on a professional level?

Absolutely not.

Do I have any sort of credentials at all?

Nope, but I have a Zune pass and Last.fm.

What will the winners get?

Nothing of any significance. I’ve got a sheet of gold star stickers though.

So why am I doing this?

It gives me something to do on a Wednesday afternoon.

And there you have it! Now, this was a decent year for music. We saw Adele claim the music industry as her own property, we saw Lady Gaga do all sorts of crazy shit, we saw the beginnings of a global Kpop invasion, we saw some awesome debuts, some great breakthroughs, and overall, we heard some awesome music. Thus, the most awesomest songs have been nominated (by me) for awards in each of their respective categories.

Now, in general, I hate watching these award shows and seeing Gaga, Swift, and Katy dominate the shows. So, my rule…one song, one nomination. The only exceptions will be for the categories “Best Music Video”…because the music video does not equal the song itself, and “Best Debut” because theoretically, the debut song could be nominated in another genre-specific category.

Also, I hate labels. To me, it’s entirely possible for a song to have multiple genres, and I feel like some labels like “rock” and “pop” are way too general. Thus, I have done my best to set definitions, break down categories, and keep similar songs in their own category.

I’ve been out of the game for a while now. This is just a friendly post to my billions of devoted reads saying that slowly but surely…I will return! I’ve got tons of great music that I want to talk about, and a couple other surprises up my sleeve. One of which will be my first ever END OF THE YEAR AWARDS!

James Morrison - Up (ft. Jessie J)

James Morrison recently released his latest album, The Awakening. After giving it a first listen, I was highly impressed with the quality of the songs. However, one song easily stood out from the others. Like the last album’s stand out single, “Broken Strings”, which featured a duet with Nelly Furtado, this album too features a collaboration that is nothing short of magical. That single is called “Up,” and it features Jessie J. Jess and James each possess a gritty, soulful voice, so they complement each other remarkably well. “Up” makes excellent use of their vocal chemistry to deliver a touching ballad with a great message; keep your head up.

Is it better than “Broken Strings?” Maybe not quite, but in my opinion, that song is one of the best ever. Period. To come within kissing distance of that song is a feat that deserves praise. This song is top notch, and is easily one of my new favorite.

Mumford and Sons - The Cave

Mumford and Sons made a huge impact on the industry with their unique debut album, “Sigh No More.” It’s easy to see why. Few acts have managed to create a sound as unique and distinct as theirs while still managing to capture the interest of the mainstream.

Their debut single, “Little Lion Man” was nothing short of a masterpiece as far as I’m concerned, and the album’s follow up single, “The Cave” is a worthy second single. That’s why its today’s song of the day. By now, everyone knows why “The Cave” is such a good song, so rather than talk about its musical merits, I’d like to talk about something else.

Being and English major, the one thing that I love about Mumford and Sons most of all is their tendency to make literary references in their lyrics. While most people would assume that “The Cave” is a reference to Plato’s Allegory of The Cave, I would argue against such a superficial interpretation. Yes, you can make that argument, and the lyrics could be interpreted to support it, but it seems to me to be undermining the creative ability of the band.

There are some definite references to “The Odyssey,” even those beyond the direct references to the “Siren’s song.” The song makes references to “Widows and Orphans,” which are exactly what Penelope and Telemachus were during Odysseus’s absence. Similarly, there was also the instance with the cyclopes, Polyphemus, who held Odysseus captive in his cave. Furthermore, if I remember correctly, Odysseus was indeed tied to his ship’s post once his crew mutinied. The Odyssey contains many themes which are also present in this song; the journey to self, the search for truth, returning home…there are many instances in which the song and the epic intersect one another.

Also, after doing some digging it appears that there are some direct religious references as well. The group’s vocalist is apparently a huge fan of the philosophy of St. Fracis of Asisi. As such, the song is pretty much taken directly from the biography of St. Fancis. This biography contains a passage about “Seeing the world upside down,” as if he had just “Come out of a cave walking on his hands.” Coincidence?

There are many ways in which to interpret this song, and for that, I am grateful. There’s something beautiful about a song that elicits intellectual discussion on internet message boards. In doing what can only loosely be called “research,” I’ve seen so much intelligent discussion of opinions and interpretations! Thank god for Mumford and Sons…bringing intellect back to music.

Trapt - Forget About the Rain

For those of you who don’t know, my home of North Eastern Pennsylvania is currently experiencing rainfall on quite an epic scale, which has cause some major flooding. For those of you who do know, you’re busy fleeing, so it doesn’t matter anyway. Luckily, I live on a hill top, so I can blog about it from the safety of my computer.

Anyway, school cancellations have given me some time to dedicate to my poorly managed blog. As such, all this talk about rain has caused Trapt’s “Forget About the Rain” to lodge itself in my brain…and I can’t complain about that!

This song has always been one of my favorites from Trapt. This song deviates from their typical post-grunge sound. It still features their signature hard rock sound, but mixed with a lighter fare. It features some acoustic guitars, bongos, and a subtle keyboard that adds a nice flavor. It’s got a somewhat funkier flavor, making it one of Trapt’s more upbeat songs, which is complemented by the optimistic lyrics.

With a unique sound, and great lyrics, “Forget About the Rain” is a great deviation from Trapt’s usual sound. It shows that they’re capable of being versatile, and giving us something new and different.

On a side note, for the 100,000+ being evacuated; stay safe, stay calm, and god bless.

Review; Gym Class Heroes - Stereo Hearts (ft. Adam Levigne)

The Good, The Bad, and The Verdict;

The Gym Class Heroes had a huge debut back in 2006. “Cupid’s Chokehold” was a unique chart topper, and “Clothes Off” was a fun party song. It seemed like they were poised for a good long career, until they pretty much disappeared thereafter. After quietly releasing an album back in 2008, the Heroes have decided to give it another go; this time, with some help from their seniors, Maroon 5. Their latest single, “Stereo Heart” combines a hip-hop beat and some lyrical flow with a catchy pop-rock sound, as well as dam Levigne’s signature vocals. This song has slowly started climbing the charts, but will it bring the Gym Class Heroes back to the top? Here’s my breakdown of “Stereo Hearts.”

The Good;

The verses are surprisingly dark and grimy for this group. It was slightly unexpected, but surprisingly good!
Travie McCoy is a great rapper, and he really shines during the verses. With honest and sensitive lyrics, and great delivery, his parts are easily my favorite part of the song.
I do like the lyrics, especially in the chorus. On paper, they are poetic, but with a sense of fun and humor.

The Bad;

It’s not so much that the chorus is bad, but it just doesn’t flow well with the rest of the song. It’s like listening to two different songs that somehow got tangled up.
The chorus is light and upbeat, while the verses are dark and grimy…it doesn’t add up. Lyrically, it does even less for the song.
Catchy? Meh…I’m not hitting replay. In fact, the poor flow makes it quite easy to forget.
The “Oh-oh-oooh” breakdown that follows the chorus is, quite frankly, a song killer. It sounds like a jumbled mess that really messes with the song’s pacing.

The Verdict; Bad
When this song is good, it’s good. Unfortunately, its off and on. The verses sell you on a solid hip-pop track that’s surprisingly pleasant. Then, one your bout to buy, it switches up to a pop rock track that just leaves a different taste in your mouth. I honestly feel like the collaboration was completely unnecessary, and I would have much rathered hear the Gym Class Heroes make a good quality song, rather than try to put out a song that would take them back to the top 10.

Kimberly Caldwell - Without Regret

American Idol helps us find some incredible talent. Back in season 2, I was fairly certain that Kimberly Caldwell would be the last woman standing. However, she was voted out prematurely at 7th place. However, she did manage to carve out a nice career for herself, and almost 8 years later, we finally have her debut album.

Some idols seize the momentum immediately, and give us a rushed and cheaply produced album. Others have album that go into production hell and never see the light of day. At first, it seemed this would be the case with Kim. She began recording a series of very Pink like pop songs after the show. Those were eventually scrapped in favor of going country. After a few itunes releases, those were scrapped in favor of signing a major label deal with Vanguard records. After her album being pushed back for almost 2 years, her debut album, “Without Regret” is finally on store shelves, and I must say, it was worth the wait.

Rather than try and give us something that the record label big wigs think will sell, Kim took her time to give us an album that represents her as an artist. The songs off “Without Regret” each showcase Kim’s powerful, husky voice which made me a fan during her time on the show. Each song is well produced and delivered excellently.

Without being too repetitive, the 11 songs range from the upbeat and danceable pop song, “Desperate Boys and Stupid Girls” to the tender and soulful ballad, “If You’re Gonna Fall.” Other album standouts include the dark and gritty, no nonsense “Mess of You,” which shows Kim at her raspiest, as well as tender tracks, “Say Love” and “Taking Back My Life.” However, my personal favorite is the powerful and retching break up anthem, “Heart Like Mine.” This album has something for everyone to listen to.

Powerful vocals, a range of styles, and overall good songwriting make “Without Regret” a rare gem in the Idol discography, and an excellent debut. Although the Idol momentum may have worn off, I’d rather see Kim have a low key career making solid music than sell records with silly pop songs. “Without Regret” is quality, and I’m glad to see Kim putting her best foot forward to start her musical career.

Sistar - So Cool

Since their debut, Sistar has managed to set themselves apart from the many other groups, and have quickly become one of the top girl groups. With Hyorin’s voice now recognized as one of the best in the industry, Da Som’s sexy new look, Bora’s cooler than iced tea rapping, and So Yu’s stunning improvement, they have since solidified their presence in the Kpop industry with their latest single, “So Cool.”

“So Cool” ditches the racer chick style of Sistar’s last song, and takes them in a glamorous new direction. The girls are now styled in short, chic and sexy evening dresses that make them look simply stunning. It’s easily the best style they’ve worn since they’ve debuted. The music video is even better, as we re treated to several scenes which keep the adorable humor that we’d expect from this group. Despite the girls dressing their best, we get to see them running track and jumping hurdles, handing off hand bags instead of batons. It’s a hilarious mix of chic and silly that really makes Sistar stand out.

While the song isn’t anything revolutionary, it does help to carry the momentum that the group picked up off of “How Dare You.” Like their last song, “So Cool” features a strong electronic dance beat, as well as a catchier than the flu chorus. We begin with a group chant, followed by a solid verse delivered by Hyorin and Da Som. Bora adds a laid back rap verse, and even So Yu picks up some more vocal parts in the bridge and chorus.

With a new style, and the Brave Brother’s excellent production, Sistar is sure to have a hit with their fierce new track, “So Cool.”

Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid

Very few albums leave the impression that Janelle Monae’s “The Arch Android” has left. Monae’s ambitious artistic vision is clearly realized in these 18 dazzling tracks. The Arch Android is a bold concept album that plays out like a sci-fi epic, telling chapters two and three of the story of Monae’s character, Cyndi Mayweather.

The story is both simple, and complex. The year is 3,005, and we find ourselves in the city of Metropolis. Androids are an accepted part of society, however, there is one rule; Androids, lacking human emotion, are forbidden to fall in love. However, Cyndi Mayweather has indeed discovered love for a human. As such, she is scheduled for immediate disassembly, causing her to flee for her very life. Although it may sound like a bad Sci-Fi romance, the story plays out beautifully though Monae’s music. This story began with her debut EP, but The Arch Android picks up with Mayweather on the run, and takes her on a journey through the Metropolis underground, to her eventual rise as a messiah like figure. The story leaves us with a cliffhanger ending, leaving us in anticipation for Monae’s next move.

Although the story is there to entertain fans, it’s not necessary to get her Sci-Fi mythology to understand her music. Each song is brilliantly crafted, and has significance both with and without the overarching story.

Her unique style of music seamlessly blends numerous genres. Although R&B and Funk are the two most apparent sounds, as on her hit, “Tightrope,” you’ll find her taking liberties with almost every genre under the sun. The albums first track, “Dance or Die,” shows off Monae’s impressive rapping skills, while “57821” is a toned down folk song. “Come Alive” shows Monae at her most rocking moment, as she lets out an absolutely stunning wail to this shockingly good fusion of Jazz and Punk. Songs like “Babopbye Ya” just beg to be performed on Broadway, while “Wondaland” and “Locked Inside” are upbeat and funky pop numbers.

Despite the Sci-Fi setting, the only time you’ll never hear an electronic beat, as each of her songs feature the feeling of a live band. Auto-tune is all but absent, minus the Psychedelic rock song “Mushroom’s and Roses,” in which case it is used with a keen sense of artistic purpose.

Few artists are as visionary as Janelle Monae, and I believe that The Arch Android is truly a piece of musical genius. Few artists are able to establish their own identity in a lifetime, as Monae has with her debut album. She has managed to take a grand artistic vision, and make it both accessible, and simply incredible to listen to.

O.A.R. - Heaven

O.A.R. has recently released their seventh studio album, King. It’s a solid album, but today, my focus is on its lead single, “Heaven.” This unique song has a solid and catchy melody, and striking lyrics that carry a pleasant meaning that everyone can get behind.

There are few ways that a song called “Heaven” can go. Instantly, upon hearing the title, everyone hears the first few lines of the Bryan Adams love ballad. However, O.A.R. takes the song title and spins it on its head. This song sings about rejecting the concept of the traditional edenic heaven, full of arbitrary things. With lyrics like “All I have is life, and I don’t wanna go to heaven if I can’t get in,” this song is all about enjoying life, living in the moment, and finding happiness in the life we have.

These uplifting lyrics are magnified by the song’s upbeat arrangement. The melody is excellently crafted; the backing choir helps play up the songs big and inspiring message, while the acoustic sound reminds of the simplicity of the song’s theme and message. The chorus has a pleasant tune that will easily stick, and simply beckons the listener to chime in with a “I don’t wanna go to Heaven if I can’t get in!”

“Heaven” is an easy listen that actually packs a heavy meaning into a jaunty little tune. It’s a great melody that almost anyone can enjoy. Every now and then, we need to be reminded to smile at life, and this song serves to remind us that we create our own happiness.

Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge

Certain songs can stir up certain emotions in the human psyche. Nicki Minaj is known for her fun, and quirky rapping styles, but I find “Roman’s Revenge” to be one of the boldest and baddest songs around. The song is positively primal, delivering a solid “F*** you!” as Nicki spits rhymes with a fire that most female MC’s can’t come close to. If there was ever a song to listen to while you’re absolutely pi**ed…this is it. Rage, anger, fury…its all in this song.

To anyone doubting Miss Minaj’s talent, or to anyone who says that she’s all looks, all pop, and no substance, you can be sure that this song is dedicated to you. Not only that, but you can be sure that Nicki is going to shatter all of your preconceived notions. This song is hip-hop at its core; no flashing bling, no electronic beats, and no pop radio appeal. With a simple beat, and an ominous chorus backing her, Nicki’s unique delivery is highlighted. Indeed, Nicki is out to grab the haters by the throat, and with none other than Shady by her side, she does just that.

Lyrically, this song is top notch. With a rhyme that begins, “I am not Jasmine, I am Aladdin” you know that you’re getting something that’s both creative and fresh. Many lyrics actually require some heavy thought, and leave you with something to chew on later. The rhymes simply make your head spin as Nicki and Shady deliver them at dizzying speeds with a one-two-punch. In the end, it delivers a solid knock out.

Duncan Sheik - Barely Breathing

Duncan Sheik’s “Bareley Breathing” is one of those songs that seems to have survived the test of time. Fifteen years later, and this song is still receiving heavy rotation. Bands still cover this song in bars all across America, and the crowds still sing along. Not too shabby. Even if it is the song that earned him a “one hit wonder” status, at least he still had that one song that everyone knows.

Back in the 90’s, when the song was topping the charts, I had paid it little attention…mostly because at that point, I thought the Spice Girls were the best thing in the world. Today, however, with my matured and refined tastes, I can see just what a truly amazing track “Barely Breathing” actually is.

The melody is incredibly catchy, and yet the acoustic guitars and soft drums are understated, which really allows the focus to be on Duncan’s voice as he croons out some incredibly introspective and sensitive lyrics. The songwriting behind this song is, in my opinion, its most distinguishing quality. These words are simply beautiful, and convey the sense of loneliness, and confusion felt when your thinking twice about a relationship. His smooth yet gravely voice really helps convey those heavy emotions in a down to earth way. Its sensitive, believable, and relatable.

Its easy to see why “Barely Breathing” has remained a hit through out all these years. I have since checked out Duncan’s discography, and I have been pleased with what else I’ve heard. However, “Barely Breathing” remains his best work, and one of the best singer/songwriter tunes of the 20th century.

Janelle Monae - Tightrope

I’ve been a fan of the incredible Miss Monae ever since her debut EP. Not many artists are as visionary as she is. Plus, her funky fusion of soul, jazz, rock, pop, hip-hop, and whatever else she can grab a hold of is simply captivating. “Tightrope” is her biggest hit, and it is Monday’s song of the day!

A few nights ago, I had the pleasure of seeing the American Idols perform live on their tour. “Tightrope” was performed as a group performance between contestants Pia Toscano, Naima Adeadpo, Thia Megia, and Haley Reinhart. The minute I heard that bass drop, my heart started pounding with excitement. These ladies did a marvelous job with the song, but nobody can perform it the way Janelle does. Hell, nobody can PERFORM the way Janelle does! Seeing the performance served to remind me why I loved the song so much to begin with.

“Tightrope” continues with the story of Cyndi Mayweather, as she flees for her life from the Wolfmasters (out to disassemble her for falling in love with a human. If you don’t get it…your missing out.) It is during her incarceration that she begins her rise to power, leading an underground movement against her captors. However, you would never know that by listening to the lyrics. To any new listener, this would sound like a simple, fun and funky song! To the fans that know what’s going on, it’s a pivotal moment in the story.

It satisfies everyone in truly genius way, but let’s not forget the most important part of the song; its catchy, original, and fun. “Tightrope” uses some old-school funk to create a catchy song that’s both classic and contemporary. Monae’s voice delivers the style well; with sharp, staccato verses, and smooth choruses that really hook the listener. Her voice has the perfect amount of soul to really be able to sell the song in a way that not many could.

Yes, lord knows that I love me song Gaga, but her winning is almost too expected. With Mat’s album, I feel like I’ve stumbled upon something of a buried treasure. This album is simply one refreshing and original track after the next. He manages to take the indie-pop, singer/songwriter sound that’s become standard for white guys with guitars, and make it sound simply original. Songs like “Ships in the Night,” “Learning to Love,” and “Chasing the Light” are simply brilliant; both touchingly emotional and ear-pleasingly catchy. His songwriting skills are top notch, and outdo most of his contemporaries. Personally, now that I have discovered his music, I’m disappointed in myself for taking four years to find out about Mat Kearney and his excellent music. “Young Love” is going to be that album that I keep telling people about…for a good long while.

My new favorite way to find music is to simply think of something that would be a cool song title. I’ll throw something random into the Zune search bar (iTunes for the rest of the world), and see what song titles come up. Then I’ll pick one randomly. Sometimes, it yields surprising results! When I decided to see what would come up if I typed in “In the Night Sky,” I stumbled onto this little treasure by Mat Kearney, called “Ships in the Night.” Most people are still riding high on “Hey Mama,” but I haven’t really been able to get into that song. However, “Ships in the Night” is an excellent track that definitely deserves to be Mat’s second single.

The song has and great sound that’s both catchy and captivatingly emotional. A tender piano accented by acoustic guitar riffs create a lovely melody, while the driving beat simply begs you to clap along. Its a refreshingly light sound, but the lyrics give the song a sensitive darkside. In this song, Mat sings of the loneliness felt in a strained relationship, using a slew of metaphors and imagery that’s simply genius. His style of sing/rapping the verses is interesting, but his voice really makes the chorus come alive.

In all, this is an excellent track that deserves to be heard. It easily surpasses many other songs on the radio today by more mainstream artists. Personally, I believe that “Ships in the Night” is far superior to “Hey Mama,” and I’m anxiously awaiting the day I hear Mat announce this song as his followup single. Honestly…this was one of the best random finds I’ve ever stumbled upon, and I’m really grateful to have discovered Mat Kearney’s music in such a way!

Lady Gaga - You and I

I’ve been into this song since the very first time I heard it, but ever since Lady Gaga released the music video for “You and I,” the song has been playing in my head nonstop. For that reason, the little monster within me is making “You and I” the song choice of the day for Thursday.

This song is a worthy follow up to “Speechless.” Keeping with the 80’s rock ballad sound, “You and I” combines elements of classic rock and dance-pop music. Featuring a heavy rock and roll sound, strong guitars, and a clap along beat, this song is very reminiscent of Gaga’s inspirations, such as Queen and Bowie. It’s a refreshing change of pace from her usual heavy electronic club bangers, and really demonstrates her talents at her best.

“You and I” is by far Gaga’s best vocal demonstration. Was she always hiding that soulful quality of her voice? Sure, it came out in “Brown Eyes,” but once the breakdown hits, Gaga unleashes a full barrage of sheer vocal prowess that can put some of the biggest divas to shame. Gaga’s sultry voice simply grabs hold of every single word and makes them come alive. She feels this song, and anyone can feel that conviction.

Clearly, these lyrics are close to her heart. Supposedly, this song is an ode to her on- again-off-again boyfriend, a New York City bar owner from none other than Nebraska. It’s a well written and very personal song, and I’m really happy to see Gaga share her tender side with us.

This rock n’ roll ballad has a melody that simply grabs hold of its audience, demanding that they raise their lighters, and their drink, and sing along. Gaga’s conviction and her soul is simply amazing, and I truly believe that “You and I” represents Gaga at her best.

Every now and then, I’ll hear a song that simply goes against all of my principles, and yet, I’ll find some odd quirk that makes me fall in love with it. This is what we call a “guilty pleasure,” and my latest guilty pleasure is Wednesday’s song choice. It comes to us from Disney’s least annoying poster child, Selena Gomez! The song is her latest hit, the oh so addictive, and dare I say “cool,” “Love You Like a Love Song.”

Plain and simple, this song is an absolute ear worm. The repetitive electronic dance beat is infectious, and the chorus is like crack for the ears. It’s a song that you’ll have stuck in your head for days. The more I seem to listen to it, the more I come to terms with the fact I’m jamming out to the number one song on Radio Disney. It’s actually a really cool song once you give it a chance!

Selena has always been the most reliable hit maker of the Disney divas, and her career is helping her establish an identity outside of Walt’s empire. Sure, she may not have the best voice, but her upbeat and cool pop songs play into her strengths, and actually hold their own when placed next to anything on the Billboard top 10. “Love You Like a Love Song” is another cool dance-pop song that is sure to score a hit for her, a la her breakout, “Naturally.”

Tuesday’s song of the day comes to us from the far east…The Far East Movement to be exact. I’ll never understand the group’s decision to release mediocre songs like “Rocketeer” and “If I Was You” as singles when there were so many other great songs off Free Wired. One such song is tonight’s pick, “Fighting For Air.” This song features vocalist Vincent Frank, and in my humble opinion, is the group’s best song after G-6.

Sure, it doesn’t quite have the hyped up dance beat of G-6, but the strong bass and laid back rnb sound do give the song a nice tone. It’s a cool type of song that you can easily groove to while your out on the dance floor. The smooth rapping adds a great hip-hop flavor, while the guest vocals provide a catchy melody for listeners to grab onto. Plus, the lyrics are actually kind of classy, which is refreshing! It’s a definite step up from the mediocrity of “Rocketeer.” Once this song gets released to radio stations, it will be a hit. Mark my words.

Raphael Saadiq – Stone Rollin’

Yes, this week, Raphael Saadiq comes out on top, though not by much. In the end, I’ve decided that this album is simply too well crafted to not be praised. The fact that it sounds like I could have bought it in the sixties just fascinates me, and I truly do love that classic sound. Songwriting, vocals, and production are all just top notch on this album. As such, I feel that Stone Rollin’ is simply timeless, and will be looked at as a classic many years from now.

MBLAQ - Mona Lisa

Back when I thought that I had the ability to actually “review” and “rate” music, I had wanted to review this song. However, there’s something suspiciously unfair about critically analyzing a song that you can find no fault with. “Mona Lisa” is easily the best song to be released by Kpop dude group, MBLAQ (pronounced M-Black).

This song picks up on the trend of house beats mixed in with traditional instrumentals a la Edward Maya. “Mona Lisa” features a delicate French accordion along with a Spanish guitar riff which gives this song a unique European flair. The beat is nothing short of fantastic. Powerful bass and a strong electronic sound help create the image of a rave, and there’s nothing better than a European rave.

The boys have definitely stepped it up in the vocal department as well. Thunder is usually known for his rapping, but this stands out as his best vocal performance to date. Additionally, G.O. shows the full range of his voice, and he has some power that he’s been hiding from us. His high notes are fantastic, and his lower register is cool and mysterious.

Although this song is fantastic, there’s nothing quite like watching them perform it live. Their new style, along with the killer choreography made it quite the experience. How they can manage to consistently turn in solid vocal performances while never missing a step is a feat that is beyond me. The fact that “Mona Lisa” has yet to score a #1 thanks to that god awful “Roly Poly” song is crime. MBLAQ has created their best song to date with “Mona Lisa.”

Little Big Town - A Little More You

I’m running a little bit behind on this blog, but the song choice for Sunday is none other than “A Little More You” by Country group, Little Big Town. That’s right, I actually chose a Country song! Nothing against the genre, but just don’t usually “go” for country. However, I had the pleasure of seeing this group live several years ago, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since!

What I love about this band is their incredible harmonies. Not many groups can harmonize in the incredible way that Karen, Kim, Phil and Jim can (not even Glorianna or Lady A). On this song, Jim takes his turn as the main vocalist, and he leads the group well with his smooth Country tone. It’s got just enough twang without being overbearing as so many other Country acts are. However, when they all chime in for the chorus, the song hits a sweet spot that’s nothing short of magical.

Overall, this song is an excellent summertime song. With a light and upbeat banjo providing a nice twang to the sound, you can’t help but think of having some good ‘ol country fun. The melody is shockingly good. Its one that you’ll find yourself singing over and over again. “A Little More You,” is easily one of Little Big Town’s best.

Armin Van Buuren - Feels so Good ft. Nadia Ali

Saturday’s song choice comes to us from trance legend, Armin Van Buuren. Armin has been named the world’s #1 DJ four years in a row. However, despite this, I was never really into his music until I discovered track called “Feels So Good.” This smooth and sexy track features the vocals of the lovely miss Nadia Ali, who you may remember as the voice behind Iio. The combination produces fabulous results, which has in turn opened the door to Armin’s discography for me.

Hypnotic and exotic are two words that describe the song perfectly. This song features a very cool and relaxed, yet danceable beat that really makes it stand out. Rather than rely on a hyped up bpm and fast paced beats, this song utilizes a hypnotic and heavy beat with a subdued melody. Most other DJs would have created something that ran the risk of being “boring,” but Armin makes it captivating and infectious. You can definitely groove to this while your out on the dance floor.

Nadia’s exotic vocals really add to the song, and help create a smooth and sexy sound. She never was a diva, but this type of song doesn’t really require her to be. What she lacks in vocal power, she makes up with a unique tone that’s kind of like ice cream for the ears. The melody really works for her, allowing her to take a chorus that would be drab on anyone else, and make it something decadently alluring and captivating.

“Feels so Good” is a song that just oozes with “cool.” Everything from the subdued beat and Nadia’s exotic vocals give this song a great sound that’s both unique and interesting. “Feels so Good” definitely feels good, and has quickly become one of my favorite trance tracks.

Skillelt - Whispers in the Dark

Every now and again, I’ll hear a song that I haven’t heard in a good long while, and I’ll be reminded of the qualities that I fell in love with in the first place. Such is the case with Skillet’s 2006 hit “Whispers in the Dark.” After hearing for the first time in what seemed like forever, I instantly fell in love with the track all over again. Possessing the dark and heavy qualities of metal, as well as the melodic and lyrical qualities of alternative-pop, Skillet’s sound is both accessible and captivating.

One quality that I love about this song above all else is the lyrics. Many har rock songs have a tendency to be very dark, angst ridden, cynical, and intensely fierce. While maintaining that same intensity, “Whispers in the Dark” is both positive and moving. Written from the perspective of god, this song reminds us that we are never truly alone. With brilliant lyrics such as;

“No, you'll never be alone
When darkness comes
I'll light the night with stars
Hear my whispers in the dark”

I can't help but get chills each time I listen to this song.

However, for a Christian band, Skillet isn’t overly preachy. The lyrics are also open to interpretation, which I like. Is this song about god, or is it a song about a human relationship? Originally, I believed that it was a simple hard-rock love ballad about faithfulness and forgiveness. Personally, I like both ideas.

Despite the lyrics, don’t think for a second that you can’t headbang to this song. It has all of the intense guitar playing and heavy drums needed to rock out. Both dark and melodic, “Whispers in the Dark” is a well crafted song from a great band.

Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'

I’ve always been a fan of classic blues and soul, and right now, I am loving the fact that so many artists are trying to bring that timeless sound back into the limelight. As such, today’s “Song of the Day” is none other than “Stone Rolling” by neo-soul pioneer, Raphael Saadiq.

I first stumbled onto this song through Vh1. I was pleasantly surprised to find this being played, since it really doesn’t feature a popular sound. Saadiq’s sound is “old school” to the max, but “old school” has never sounded so cool. Saadiq’s voice has all the qualities of the great Motown singers, and his songwriting is nothing short of fantastic. “Stone Rolling” is compelling from start to finish.

The instrumentation gives the song a classic feel that easily fits between the heavy hitters of the sixties. The guitars and harmonica playing help give the song a bluesy feel, while the bass and keys help recreate a soulful Motown sound. It’s an excellent homage to the sound; without any of the seventies funk that some artists often turn to. One review noted that there’s a definite distinction between “classic” and “retro.” Saadiq is all classic, baby, all classic.

Friendly Fires - Show Me Lights

While most people are jamming out to “Hawaiian Air,” I’ve been happily enraptured by another song off of Friendly Fires’ breakout album, Pala. “Show Me Lights” is in my opinion, a much catchier, flashier, and more accessible song than it’s Hawaiian album-mate. Now don’t get me wrong, Friendly Fires have become one of my favorite new comers, but “Show Me Lights” is easily my favorite song off of Pala.

“Show Me Lights” begins with an upbeat hip-hop beat, featuring both great drum playing, as well as an electronic beat. It effectively combines elements of hip-hop, new wave rock, and electronica in a colorful pop package. McFarlane’s vocals are pleasant and distinctive enough, but combined with the unique sound, a really fascinating melody is created. The beat is fun and distinctive, the lyrics are colorful and fun, and the hook is catchy and pleasant. Its an all around great track!

Although small, I’ve always enjoyed the dancepunk genre. With LCD Soundsystem retiring, I do believe that Friendly Fires could be the next big electronic-indie-dance-rock…er, thing. Please, please, please let “Show Me Lights” be the group’s second single!

f(x) - Hot Summer

Each year, there’s one definitive summer hit. Although Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have given us some huge summer hits, I’ve got to say that the Koreans are having the best summer by far! This year, f(x) have had a huge hit with the incredibly catchy “Hot Summer.” If this isn’t THE definitive summer song, I don’t know what is.

Although this song is a cover of Monrose’s 2007 hit, I tend to prefer f(x)’s version a bit more. Not only can the dance circles around Monrose, but they bring a fun, playful, youthful energy to the song, whereas Monrose is all about the sex appeal. I definitely find f(x)’s energy to be much more refreshing and infectious.

“Hot Summer” is incredibly catchy, with a chorus that will easily become your summertime anthem. The contrast in the girls’ voices are also incredibly refreshing, and keep the verses and the bridge sounding just as fresh. Amber’s rap helps to add a little bit of swag, but the dance beat is all you need to hear to get moving.

However, the girls are at their best when they perform live, and that is where the full effect of the song can be felt. Their onstage choreography has always been top notch. Not a single girl misses a single step, and they easily have the most intricate choreography out of any other girl group. F(x)’s style is also very striking, as each girl has a unique style and identity.

In short, “Hot Summer” is 100% pure summertime fun! I must admit…this song has made me want to come party in Korea. It looks like more fun than I’m having in my American summer!

The Zutons - Valerie

A few days ago, a friend and I were having a casual conversation about music. We got on the topic of Amy Winehouse’s untimely death (rest in peace you crazy little thing, you.) During the conversation, I mentioned that I was a fan of “Valerie,” at which point my friend said “You know that song was a cover, right?” Apparently, I had been deceived this whole time. “Valerie” is in fact an original song by a quirky little band called The Zutons. After telling me a bit about them, my friend had me convinced that I simply HAD to check out this band. So I did.

Now, the last thing I want to do is make this an issue of “who did it better?” I really like the Mark and Any version, but I’m also really digging the Zunton’s version. Of course the song itself is fantastic; quirky lyrics, a catchy melody, and a jaunty composition. Additionally, the Zutons have a really neat style which combines the right amount of “throwback” with the right amount of “current.”

The saxophone playing gives the song a great feeling of classic soul, while the upbeat guitar riffs give the song a heavy dose of funk. All the while, McCabe’s vocals help to complement the retro sound with his quirky indie rocker stylings. It’s a solid sound that helps give the song character, but the groups full colors really come out during the song’s offbeat little music video. “Valerie” is an undeniably great song, and I’m really glad that I was introduced to its true creators.

Exactly one week ago, I began the overhaul of my blog. In this new system of reviewing music, I only choose the best songs to post, and at the end of each week, I will take the albums that produced those seven songs, and choose the best among them! As such, this will be the very first “Album of the Week” from Dervis’s Audio Addiction! Yay!

Bassnectar – Divergent Spectrum!

Divergent Storm functions as half Bassnectar album, and half mix-tape. Many of the songs found on the album are in fact remixes of other artists’ songs. As a result, each song has a unique identity, and a unique sound.

From the hip-hop inspired lead single, “Upside Down,” we move on to the punk/ska flavored “Immigraniada,” followed afterwards by the metal inspired “Boomarang,” and later by “Lights,” which features pop singer Elle Goulding. It really is an ingenious method that keeps each song sounding new and fresh. As a result, the album never stays stagnant, and is constantly moving, and ever evolving.

Despite the numerous genres to be found on Divergent Spectrum, each song is tinged with Bassnectar’s signature dub-step sound, which creates a sense of cohesion amongst the diverse tracks. Each track is steeped in primal beats, mind melting sound effects, and a dynamic and ever changing pace. By putting his own personal stamp on so many different styles, Bassnectar shows an established musical identity that is nothing short of genius.

Aside from the four afore-mentioned tracks, highpoints include the hip-hop inspired “The Matrix,” and the surprisingly light “After Thought.” There are many jems to be found on this album, each with its own identity. The dynamic shift in sounds keeps you constantly engaged, so there’s rarely a dull moment to be found on Divergent Spectrum. This is a definite “must listen” for any fan of electronic music.

Rebelution - Feeling Alright

Every now and then, I decide to take a step outside of my already extensive box. A few days ago, I was in an unusually upbeat and mellow mood. Hence, I decided to tune into a reggae station. That is where I discovered today’s “Song of the Day,” an upbeat little jam called “Feeling Alright” by Californian reggae band, Rebelution.

“Feeling Alright” comes off the band’s breakthrough album, “Courage to Grow.” It’s a quirky little jam that’s got a definite feel good vibe. With a mellow reggae beat, upbeat key riffs, and chilled out guitar riffs, this song is like taking a shot of “chillax”…and it goes down smoothly too. The upbeat lyrics help keep things lively. You can’t help but smile while listening to lyrics like this;

Let’s all welcome in familiar faces, perhaps somebody who,
Has got a conflict in their life,
Tell them you’re sorry, but there’s ways to change the wrong to right,

This song is a breath of fresh air. Rebelution takes the reggae sound and makes it accessible to the rest of us, without compromising the genre’s purity. With a well crafted sound and feel good lyrics, “Feeling Alright” can’t help but find a happy place in your head. “Feeling Alright” is a great feel good song, and I encourage even those who aren’t fans of reggae to give it a spin. It could be the best four and a half minutes of your day.

Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger (ft. Christina Aguleria)

Between Marron 5, Christina, and Ke$ha, Mick sure is getting some love lately!

Since concluding their run as “judges” (and I use the term loosely) on The Voice, Adam Levigne and Christina Aguleria have teamed up for a new track called “Moves Like Jagger.” It’s a fun and upbet song that follows the typical formula for a Maroon 5 hit; take a catchy pop-rock sound, add a hint of funk, flirty and boarderline naughty lyrics, an addicting melody, and Levigne’s signature vocals. Add Christina’s powerhouse belting, and you have yourself a summer hit.

Although this song doesn’t need Christina, her presence is more than welcome. In fact, my biggest complaint is that the song waits too long to introduce her, and ultimately, her part is too small. I would have much preferred the song to be a duet rather than feature her in a cameo appearance. Regardless, her voice provides a great contrast to Adam’s smooth vocal styling.

Like Maroon 5’s best hits, this song’s funky dace beat makes it pure pop-rock fun. The beat makes it easy to groove to…especially with your best Mick impersonation! It’s easy to get this song stuck in your head between the earworm chorus, and the whistling hook. Anyone who can whistle will want to chime in! Overall, “Moves Like Jagger” is a fine piece of pop music, and stands among Maroon 5’s greatest.

Bassnectar - Upside Down

I had my first real experience with Dubstep when I was taken to a very underground club in Scotland. My life has never been the same since. This week, I happened to notice that a Dubstep song was being featured as Zune’s free download of the week. Usually, I download the song just for the hell of it, and listen to it once before shelving it. However, this week’s song, “Upside-down” by Bassnectar has become one of my top played tracks. Simply put, this song is one hundred percent, pure, unadulterated electronica fury.

Starting with a hard biting hip-hop beat, the song immediately finds its way into your brain, making you want to move. Try as hard as you might, but once the sirens start blaring, you will be unable to resist. The bass is heavy, the beat is addictive, and the looped vocals are infectious. This song is an earworm that is out to eat your brain.

Once the Dubstep breakdown hits, things really start getting funky. It gives the song a very nice pace, which is something that I can really praise this song for. It keeps switching itself up, rather than becoming stagnant like so many other electronic songs I’ve heard. As a result, I’ve found that dancing to this song isn’t just easy, its instinctive. With a beat that is so hard driving and positively primal, your body just knows how to react. Many times, it reacts in ways that are quite surprising!

This was my first experience with Bassnectar’s music, but “Upside Down” is a well-produced piece of music. This song was released as a free single, so there really isn't an excuse for you to not own this song. Pay for it if you need to! Its worth it! This song is dubstep gold; nothing short of genius. Infectious, aggressive, mind melting genius.

Katy Perry - Firework

Yes, though part of me is ashamed to admit it, the song that I am infatuated with today is none other than Katy Perry’s “Firework.” This is a bit odd for me. I’ve always been quite…“hot and cold” with Miss Perry. A love-hate relationship if you will. Although I was never a hater of “Firework,” I never really paid it any attention until this morning when it was the only god damn thing on the radio. Now, here I am, almost six months later, finally finding the magic that captivated the world…and I am unable to resist.

Maybe it’s the sheer magnitude of the song that finally got to me? After giving it a close listening, I can now finally see the sheer power of the tune’s message. Yes, some of the lyrics are nonsensical, but the themes are clear as day; self-esteem, and loving yourself despite any of your flaws…it’s a message we all need to hear one or twice in our lives. This is a song that can uplift and touch anyone with a beating heart.

Maybe this is also the first time that I’m starting to notice it, but Katy isn’t a terrible singer either. Yes, the song is clearly bigger than her vocal capabilities. However, there is a certain quirk about her voice that gives the song a unique charm that the other singers couldn’t. She isn’t the best singer, but she works with what she has…and the results are surprisingly good.

Finally, the beat and melody are simply infectious. Even at your worst mood, you’ll find it impossible to resist smiling and singing along. The string section works well with the dance beat to create an uplifting and fun sound. Sure, the chorus sounds like an excuse to make some sexual gasping, but taken at face value, those notes really do help give the song its quirky character and catchy hook.

Although this song is far from genius, it makes its point with sharp clarity, and a well produced beat. Katy’s at her best with this uplifting anthem. In my humble opinion, there is something really honest and inspiring about this song, and Katy delivers this message with a sincerity that many of her contemporaries simply haven’t replicated.

The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow

Where exactly is “Barton Hollow?” Quite frankly, I’m not even sure that the place exists, but if the opening chords of The Civil Wars’ song are any indication, its definitely somewhere in the dirty South. The striking harmonies of Joy Williams and John Paul White are chillingly gorgeous, while the acoustic guitar playing is gritty and striking. The delightful combination immediately conjures up images of dusty roads, dimly lit bars, and Louisiana’s swamplands. It’s a song that immediately takes you to new places, and there’s something to be said for that magical quality.

The unique duo also possesses some incredible vocal capabilities. Joy’s voice has a lush, smokey quality which is simply decadent. It works well to compliment John’s bluesy and soulful tone. Together, they produce some magical harmonies, and really bring the lyrics to life. With full emotional conviction, I can’t help but get chills when I listen to them sing lines like “I’m a dead man walking,” and “Can’t no preacher man save my soul.”

One of the most interesting features, however, may be the simplicity of the song’s instrumentals. Accompanied mostly by the acoustic guitar, the duo relies on little else, which allows their vocals to really soar. A delicate violin enters occasionally to help give us a tender melody, and a banjo can be heard to help keep the track “southern fried,” but otherwise, it’s uniquely minimalist. Despite the basic instrumentals, the song is paced so well that it rarely becomes boring. The melody builds, falls, and comes to a roaring climax in a well paced manner that keeps listeners interested from start to finish.

The Civil Wars may be new on the scene, but they are carving out a nice niche for themselves somewhere between folk, country, and hard rock music. “Barton Hollow” may not exist, but this song gives me a clear-as-day picture of what it’s like to walk down it’s dirt roads at sunset…haunting, mysterious, simple, and beautiful.

Review; Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks

Foster the People is the latest Indie band to have a mainstream breakthrough with their latest hit, “Pumped Up Kicks.” They’ve been getting some impressive attention for this being only their debut album and the song has been getting some rave reviews. Is it worth all of the attention? Is this band the latest fad, or do they have the substance to stand next to Indie bands like Mumford and Sons, Kings of Leon, and Arcade Fire? Here’s my review of “Pumped Up Kicks.”

The Good;

Can I express how much I love the lyrics. Maybe it isn’t so much the lyrics as it is the manner in which they are delivered. You’d expect a lyric like “Better run, better run, faster than my bullet,” to be delivered with aggression and angst. The light and ironic tone the band uses is simply genius.
While the lyrics are quite dark, I really do appreciate the message behind the song. Bullying is not ok, and that is the overall moral.
The song itself has a unique sound, which combines California surfer rock with Brit-pop. Its hypnotic bass line is simply mesmerizing, and the laid back beat has a cool-without-even-trying flair.
The chorus will hook you in, make no mistake about that. The melody is simply infectious, and will find a pleasant home inside your head.

The Bad;

The vocals are heavily filtered in the verses, which is both interesting and boring. While it may be interesting to listen to, I find that I tend to drift off during the verses, waiting for the chorus to come back.
The whistling is annoying. I’ll just say it. I hate the whistling. It isn’t catchy, it isn’t fun…its annoying.
Many elements of this song seem to have been borrowed from other sources. Everything from the ironic Indie-pop image, the catchy hook, and the radio friendly beat has been done before. The only thing thats original...is the combination of said elements into one song.

The Verdict; Good
“Pumped Up Kicks” is cool, refreshing, meaningful, and above all else, fun and addictive. Foster the People have managed to create a really cool sound, and although it does seem to borrow heavily from other sources, they’ve managed to perfect the concoction into something fresh and new. I’m digging “Pumped Up Kicks,” and I really hope to see how the band fares in the future.

The Wonder Girls are largely responsible for starting the “Hallyu Wave” that’s taking over Asia right now, and they are the pioneers of bringing the K-pop craze to the US. They made their first big step into the US market by touring with the Jonas Brothers, and eventually managed to become the first Asian artist to crack the Billboard top 100! With their catchy pop sound, addictive dance routines, and incredible talent…they could very well be the first Asian breakthrough.

Although things have been quiet from the quintet as they work on preparing their debut English album, they’ve managed to keep their name in the news by being featured on Billboard’s “Music Mashup” series. Fans voted on a song for them to cover, and B.o.B’s “Nothing on You” won, edging out my pick, Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA.”

As it turns out, the song was a perfect fit for the girls. They chose to go acoustic, which is very different from their usual style. However, the tender and emotional melody works to highlight the girls’ voices…and they sure do have some voices! They effortlessly pass the spotlight as they share solo’s, which is really interesting. Sun’s ad-libs are simply beautiful, and really give the song flavor from start to finish. So Hee’s pure voice really shines, as well as Ye Eun’s powerhouse vocal and piano playing. Lim and Yu Bin share rapper duty, and bring both swagger and charm.

Sure, the lyric change to "Beautiful boys..." may be a bit awkward, and the girls may have to work on their “Engrish,” but they really do bring something special to the song. I had chills from start to finish!

Way to go Wonder Girls!

Blink 182 - Up All Night

Blink 182 was huge during my teenage years. They seemed to be the band all of my friends were listening to as we all made that awkward journey though “self discovery” known as puberty. With fun and rebellious pop-punk music, such as “I’m Feeling This” and “All The Small Things,” Blink 182 truly was one of the voices of my generation. Although I was only ever a casual listener, I can’t deny jamming out to their tunes.

After a long hiatus, the band has finally reunited to release some new material. Their latest offering is “Up All Night,” a track which shows a more mature sound, representing a departure from their once youthful sound. With new life experiences, will they still be able to put out solid punk tracks like they used to? Do they still “got it?” Here’s my review of “Up All Night.”

The Good;

From the opening riffs, their new sound is apparent. It’s a bit more metal driven than their past work, and it is a bit refreshing to hear from them.
Lyrically, this is probably the deepest the band has ever dug. It really does demonstrate the growth the band has undergone since they last asked the question “what’s my age again?”
The nasal punk vocals of Tom DeLonge are just as strong as the day they left off.
Barker does a great job on the percussion aspect of this song, especially in the latter part of the song.

The Bad;

I don’t know much about music, but even I can tell that the guitar playing is amateur at best.
This track never really goes anywhere, and stops short of re-creating that energetic and pulse driving feeling from their past material. It never progresses past the 3 chord guitar riffs, and the chorus is just kind of flat. The song really lacks any memorable hook to grab onto.
Yes, the lyrics are deep, but the sudden angsty, emo outburst is a bit of a downer. Plus, the vocalist doesn’t really convey the lyrics with any of the emotion that they need to be believable. They may be in their 30’s now, but its still like listening to a teenager whine about “how tough they have it.”

The Verdict; Bad

Almost a decade older, it seems that Blink 182 is past its prime. While I applaud the band for evolving in musical and lyrical direction, it comes off as a half finished idea. The intent is there, but the execution needs some major tweaking. While overly angsty lyrics insist on their evolution, the stagnant arrangement and unconvincing vocals make this song pretty boring. While I was never Blink’s biggest fan, I have never used the word “boring” to describe their music. Unfortunately, there’s a first time for everything.

The Script - Nothing

Awhile ago, I gave a “bad” review to The Script’s single, “For the First Time.” While I still stand by my assessment of the song, they have still managed to have a decent sized hit with that song. Now, the lads are releasing “Nothing,” the second US single from “Science and Faith.” Akin to their past hits, this song is an emotional ballad featuring their signature light rock sound. It seems to have been working for them quite well. However, that didn’t stop me from being disappointed in their last single. Did this one faire any better? Here’s my verdict on “Nothing.”

The Good;

The vocals provided by Danny O’donohue are solid, and show a much huskier and gravely tone than we’ve seen from him in the past. He’s going for bigger notes, and his tone remains pure and heartfelt.
The chorus is much catchier than their past hits, complete with a melody that’s a bit more dynamic than their past hits. In my humble opinion, this one is easily the catchiest, which counts for a lot in a pop-rock song.
The lyrics are deep and emotional. “Nothing” is about the words you wish you had said as a lover left, and they make it feel genuine and heartfelt. I think that concept is something everyone can relate to.
I feel that the song is well paced. Beginning on a rolling guitar and emotionally charged lyrics, the song builds into the chorus, and eventually reaches a high point of lush and emotional sound before finishing strong on a final chorus.

The Bad;

Lyrically, this song follows the exact same formula set by “The Man That Can’t Be Moved,” and “Breakeven.” We get it. You’ve broken up…and you’re an emotional wreck because of it. Why don’t you try writing about something else for a change?
Like the lyrics, the sound is getting kind of stale. This song is almost the exact same style of all of their past songs; emotional, good boy, soft, pop rock. Maybe someday…they’ll try something new?

The Verdict; Good
While this song doesn’t show much growth or differentiation, it is, in my humble opinion, one of The Script’s best songs. It definitely improves over the areas that I didn’t like about their last song. Ultimately, this song is a huge upgrade from "For the First Time."

Miss A - Goodbye Baby

After a short break from their astonishing debut, Miss A has returned with “Good Bye Baby.” Keeping with their award winning formula, they’ve kept their chic, cool, and confident style with an understated beat and a solid bass. Is this simply more of the same, or are Jia, Min, Fei, and Suzy ready to take the #1 spot again? Here’s the verdict on Miss A’s “Good Bye Baby.”

The Good;

The girls have gone for a much more mature and confident look this time around. Everything about this song shines with a powerful and confident swagger. I’m really digging the fire they seem to have in their eyes.
Although they’ve kept the same basic formula of their songs, the girls have changed up the roles slightly. In their past hits, we had a verse from Min, a bridge from Suzy, the chorus came from Fei and Jia, and Jia had a rap thrown in somewhere. Now, Min and Suzy are taking the chorus while Jia does the verse and Fei takes the bridge. It’s really cool to see them switching it up!
Jia’s rap? On fire.
The beat of this song is so cool and refreshing. Although it does essentially feel like an upgraded version of “Bad Girl, Good Girl,” the slight rock edge makes it feel much more chic and powerful.

The Bad;

While I do appreciate the girls for switching up their roles, having Fei do the bridge seems a bit like wasted potential. Fei is easily the best vocalist of the group, and this song’s bridge is mostly autotuned and filtered. It just feels like Fei is capable of much more.
The beat never really changes or goes anywhere. Yes, the beat is good and infectious, but it can get a little tedious and repetitive after awhile.
The choreography to this song feels like a bit of a step down. It just lacks the swagger of “Good Girl, Bad Girl,” and the charm of “Breathe.” Although its still very good compared to most other girl groups, I feel like Miss A is capable of better. Also, there is one move that is very awkward to watch…if you’ve seen the performance, you know which one.

The Verdict; Good
I’m really enjoying “Goodbye Baby.” Although it may be a bit more of the same from the girls, they have taken it up a notch. The chic and powerful feeling of the song is infectious, and the beat is very cool. Although the choreography isn’t their best, they are still one of the best dance groups in Kpop right now, and they execute it with a poise that most groups don’t even come close to possessing. Miss A is already on top, and with this song, they’re going one notch higher.

Cobra Starship - You Make Me Feel (Ft Sabi)

Cobra Starship first stepped onto the scene with the theme song to Snakes on a Plane, but they really tore the door off its hinges with 2009’s hit album, “Hot Mess.” With a bold style, a refreshing dance-rock sound, and catchy hooks, they really took the music industry by storm. Hoping to have another summer hit, the band has released their latest single, “You Make Me Feel.” Like their signature song, “Good Girls Go Bad,” this song features the help of a female guest, up and coming singer/rapper Sabi. Is this another strong showing from the sythrock group? Let’s get the party started with a review of “You Make Me Feel!”

The Good;

Catchy dance beat? Check. Catchy hook and chorus? Check. Sounds like a recipe for a summer hit. This song is definitely easy to dance to, and the “La la la la la” hook will be stuck in your head forever.
I really enjoyed the music video for this song. It was cute, fun, interesting and entertaining, which is more than I can say for most music videos.
Gabe and Sabi’s vocals sound really cool and refreshing on the verses.

The Bad;

This song seems to lack Cobr Starship’s signature swagger. Songs like “Good Girls Go Bad” and “Hot Mess” were cool because they were bold, fun, and in-your-face. This song is much tamer, and significantly blander.
The hook is very catchy. Catchy can sometimes boarder on annoying. Sorry, but I can only take so many “La la la la la”s before I need to hit “next.”
This song lacks the signature “Starship” flavor. Each of their previous albums had a unique quality that made them stand out. They were bold, charismatic, in-your-face, cool-without-even-trying rockstars. Now…they’re just a pop group.

The Verdict; Bad
Ok, it’s not Cobra Starships best by any means. For the three minutes that it’s on, its fun and catchy, but once its over…its over, and the DJ moves onto the next song. Sure, this song may have the award winning recipe for “summer hit,” but that seems to be the problem. They followed the recipe rather than create the same bold flavor they did with “Hot Mess,” and as a result, this song is completely forgettable. Catchy…but forgettable.

2NE1 - Hate You

After releasing what is, in my humble opinion, their best single EVER, 2NE1 is wasting no time in making their next move. After obtaining an all-kill with “I Am The Best,” they have released a new single, “Hate You.” Originally, this song was intended to be on their last album, but the release was delayed. Apparently, it had to be adjusted from its original title, “F*** You.” Stupid censures. Regardless, the girls have come back with a strong song, and a fully animated video. Is 2NE1 still on top? Here’s the verdict on “Hate You.”

The Good;

Oh man, the music video may very well be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. The entire song features a brief, animated short in which the girls are portrayed as a group of Anime super-heroines, saving the world from an evil dude. Its completely bad ass, with a little humor, and a little romance thrown in.
CL takes over chorus duty, and it stands out as the song’s catchiest part. Its also the part with the most attitude and grit.
The lyrics are really cool, and really empowering for women. Sure, they aren’t very deep, but the direct and straightforward nature of the song is just fantastic!

The Bad;

This song’s beat seems to lack the typical 2NE1 flair. It’s a much lighter electro-pop beat than what we’re used to from the girls. It just seems to lack their signature intensity and swagger.
Because the beat is a little off, I’m having a hard time figuring out what I’m supposed to be doing with it. Can I dance to it? Not really, but kinda…its just a bit awkward.
It seems like each of the girls is holding back a bit on this song. We don’t get to hear any of their powerful voices, or any real intense rapping. As a result, the song just kind of stays in one place.

The Verdict; Bad
Oh Blackjacks…please don’t hate me. Lord knows I love 2NE1, but I am just not digging this song. Yes, the lyrics are really cool, but the song itself just seems to be a light fair than what I’m used to coming from 2NE1. I don’t mind watching the music video over and over, because it really is cool! However, listening to the song itself is a bit of a bore…and I have never used the words “2NE1” and “bore” in the same sentence before. The girls still have an otherwise perfect record, so maybe my standards were a bit high, but this simply isn’t one of my favorite tracks from the four divas.

Cee Lo Green - Fool For You (ft. Melanie Fiona)

Cee Lo made a huge impact on the industry with his track, famously referred to as “Forget You.” Unfortunately, many of the other solid tracks from his album were overshadowed by this song, and for whatever reason, the entirely mediocre “Bright Lights, Bigger City” as well. Either way, after loosing out to Adam Levigne on The Voice, Cee Lo is looking to have another summer hit with his latest creation, the soulful “Fool For You.” Is it going to live up to the legacy left by “Forget You,” or is this joining “Bright Lights” on the “whatever” pile?

The Good;

Cee Lo has a knack for recreating the timeless soul and Motown with a modern day twist. This song really feels like it could have come out of 1970’s Detroit with its soothing soul beats. Everything from the band to the backup singers is simply decadent.
Cee Lo’s lyrics and in your face attitude often overshadow the fact that he has a killer voice. In this song, the full range of his voice shines brightly alongside the soulful songstress, Melanie Fiona.
The lyrics are far from deep, but they do possess a simple charm that makes you feel good while listening to them. This is a simple love song that really captures the essence of a feel good soul jam.

The Bad;

This song may be a little too timeless for some people. It really is bit too “old school” for today’s top 40 radio, which is ultimately going to work against this song.
All things considered, this song really isn’t at all catchy. In fact, I’d say that the chorus is heavily lacking. There really isn’t any visible hook to grab onto.

The Verdict; Good
Like “Forget You,” Cee Lo has brought back a classic sound and made it fresh again, only this time, he has left out all of the gimmicks. Sure, pop radio may shun a slow jam, but this song possesses a classic charm and a really cool vibe that will take you back to when Soul music was at its peak. With its smooth throwback beat, and feel good lyrics, this song has a quality that most songs lack today; soul. Yes, this song has soul, and that’s what makes “Fool For You” something special.

Hinder - What Ya Gonna Do?

Back in 2005, a new band had debuted with a little song called “Lips of an Angel,” and went platinum three times because of it. That band was Hinder, and they made quite a name for themselves with their classic sound, catchy hooks, and powerhouse vocals. Although their third album was released almost a year ago, the second single, “What Ya Gonna Do?” is only starting to catch on. It seems that Hinder was strategically waiting for the summer season to release this southern rock power ballad. Does it live up to the standard they set with their first album? Here’s my review of Hinder’s “What Ya Gonna Do?”

The Good;

This song features the modernized “classic” sound that Hinder is known for, and at times, this song is very reminiscent of rock and roll’s glory days, conjuring up images of Guns n’ Roses and Bon Jovi.
The hook is pretty catchy, which makes this a really cool “sing along” song.
Austin Winkler’s vocals are distinct, and have a great rocker “growl.”

The Bad;

Everything about this track is extraordinarily…generic. Classic may be good, but there isn’t really anything special added to the sound. It’s a song that I’ve heard a hundred times before, sung by a different, interchangeable band. In a sense, it’s a cheap recreation of the glory days.
I feel like the band’s arrangement is also a bit standard. There really aren’t any distinct qualities, and this makes the song a bit…boring.

The Verdict; Bad
I do appreciate the fact that they decided to try and revive a classic sound, but in the end, this song comes off as a cheap imitation. Everything about this song is standard and generic, and just feels overly affected. While some people may appreciate the song’s simplicity, (sex, drugs, and rock n roll), but I find “What Ya Gonna Do” to just be bit lacking.

Chi Chi - Longer

Chi Chi debuted a few months ago with “Don’t Play Around,” which showed…many opportunities for improvement. In the extraordinarily tight Kpop competition, they’ve shown resilience, and have dusted themselves off for a comeback with their new song, “Longer.” This new ballad features a much more serious side of the girls, but still retains the house beats that made them unique.

Unfortunately, reviewing this song does come with one little issue. Chi Chi has released not one, but three versions of this song. The first is the MV version, which features the dance beat through out the entire song. To showcase their vocals, they have also released an acoustic version which features only their vocals and a piano. However, the version they are currently promoting is the “Remix” version, which begins with the acoustic version, and then cuts into the MV version midway. How did this strategy work? Is their comeback any better? Let’s find out as I deliver the verdict on Chi Chi’s “Longer.”

The Good;

The techno beat is actually really cool, and interacts well with the girl’s vocals. They debuted on the premise of being the “electronica and house” group, and this song actually delivers on that claim.
The girls’ vocals have definitely improved. They harmonize together very well on the choruses, and the rappers work well on the verses.
The combination of the dance beat and the chorus is both dramatic and infectious, which is an excellent combination. This song will easily find its way into your head!
The music video is really dramatic, which definitely helps the girls shed their previous image.

The Bad;

The choreography for this song is just awful. Its actually awkward just to look at, and it doesn’t work with the song at all.
The acoustic version is just not as interesting as the dance version, and I really dislike the idea of putting them together. The beginning just seems to drag on forever before the beat finally drops.
I don’t get the concept for this song at all. The girls seem to be dressed as a group of waitresses from a diner somewhere in outer space. It would been a much better decision to go in a chic, sexy, and dramatic direction a la After School’s “Because of You.”
I think that there was a huge missed opportunity by not having one of the main vocals do some adlibs during the final chorus. With them trying to be a “house” group, adlibs would have added so much more to the song, yet there are none.

The Verdict; Neutral
I really do enjoy the dance version of the song. It’s actually quite good, very catchy, and interesting. However, the song does suffer from a few major missteps. Primarily, they should ditch the acoustic version altogether. It slows the pace of the song terribly, and is quite frankly, boring. Also, the girls really have to work on their stage performances if they ever want to roll with the other groups. Chi Chi showed some improvement with “Longer,” but it doesn’t seem to be enough to bring them up to the level of the other girl groups.

Red - Lie to Me (Denial)

Chrisitan alt-rockers Red have recently released the fourth single off of their latest album, Faceless. I reviewed the lead single upon its release, but the title track only gained a “neutral” rating from me, much to the dismay of a certain reader. Meh. I’m still a fan of the band, but they have better material. Their latest single is called “Lie to Me (Denial).” Did it fair any better? Here’s the verdict on Red’s “Lie to Me.”

The Good;

The song’s chorus is probably the most infectious that any of Red’s songs have ever been. That’s not to say that their material isn’t catchy, but that this song is particularly well crafted. Both heavy and melodic, the chorus is structured very well.
Barne’s vocals possess both a soft sensitivity, as well as a deep rocker “growl” that comes through excellently. His lower register is haunting on the verses, while his full voice cuts through on the chorus.
This song is well paced, building into the chorus before falling and rising again. I really like the way the song breaks itself into the chorus, as opposed to the way in which “Faceless” simply rolled from verse to chorus without the listener even realizing it.
I really like the depth of the lyrics. What are they about exactly? I’m not sure, but what I get is that it’s a deep relationship which is currently facing some trouble, and neither party really knows how to deal with it.

The Bad;

The buildup into the song is nice, but a bit long and drawn out.
I feel like the band’s instrumentals, while good, are a bit standard in this song, and it would have been nice to hear them get a bit more creative with the sound like they have is some of the album’s other songs.
The lyrics are a little bit too specific to be relatable, and I don’t know if it will be able to connect with a mass audience.

The Verdict; Good
Personally, this song was one of my initial favorites off of the album, and I’m really glad that they decided to release it as a single. Granted, the album has been out for five months already, but hey, better late than never. I find “Lie to Me” to be not only one of the album’s best, but one of Red’s best as well.

The Wanted - Glad You Came

It’s been quite some time since a boy band or a girl group has been really popular in the States, which I find a little disappointing. I was growing up when groups like the Spice Girls, NSync, TLC and the Backstreet Boys were at their peak. Since the new millennium, it seems as though pop groups have fallen to the way side, save for the Black Eyed Peas.

Anyway, Europe and Asia still seem to be able to produce decent pop groups, so there is still hope! In fact, right now, a guy group is #1 on the BBC top 40! This group is none other than The Wanted; 5 seemingly cool dudes who make cool pop music. I decided to give their latest chart topper, “Glad You Came” a spin to see if they could be the next big group. How did it go? Here’s the verdict on “Glad You Came” by Brit-group, The Wanted.

The Good;

The dance beat is definitely catchy, and makes for a great party starter. Heavy bass and electronic tuning make this a definite feel good, summer jam.
The song earns “ear worm” status for its incredibly catchy chorus.
Despite the boy’s overly styled pretty boy looks, there’s a certain sense of realism about them that other pop groups don’t have. I feel like I’ve met these guys before in high school, and I feel like hanging out with them might not be unbearable.

The Bad;

The lyrics to this song are downright idiotic. “I decided you look well on me.” What the frack? “I’ll put a drink in your hand/ so drink it if you can.” As opposed to…what? Hey, songwriting isn’t for everyone.
If you’re going to be a vocal group, you should probably have some vocals to support your claim. I wouldn’t mind it if they had at least ONE main vocalist who can do the difficult singing, like in Akcent’s Adrian or Parade’s Bianca, but damn…none of them have any sort of power to their voice at all. It’s all the same limited range "singing" that you could find at a kareoke bar. Harmonies? Forget it.
Since the chorus is followed by a dance beat breakdown, I was expecting some sort of choreography to accompany the vocal silence. None. None at all. Even in their live performances, the lads just kind of stare into the crowd, looking lost on stage, which is simply inexcusable.

The Verdict; Bad
Downright atrocious actually. This group really does embody what is wrong with pop groups today. There is no actual substance. With no vocal talent, stage presence, dancing ability, or musicality, all they have to fall back on is their humble good looks, and frat boy swagger. Sure, they have a catchy chorus and an infectious dance beat, but who doesn’t anymore? Sorry, but I’m really not feeling The Wanted. Sorry boys, but you’re no Take That.

Staind - Not Again

Back in 2001, I was a pre-teen in 6th grade, going through that awkward phase where you’re not a kid anymore, but you’re still not mature enough to be an adult. As such, I was anxious to explore alternative sources of music, as until then, all I had known was the mainstream world of pop princesses and boy bands (my parents did want me listening to rap music). However, a little song called “It’s Been Awhile” came into light, and really darkened up my mixtape (playlists hadn’t exactly caught on yet.) That song was by a band called Staind, and it was my first experience with what you could call “real” rock music.

Since then, I’ve kept an eye on this band through out the years. As such, I was interested in hearing their latest single, “Not Again,” which was released yesterday (7/19/2011). Although the band has lost their first member, it is still quite impressive that they’ve been around for this long, constantly putting out new music. Now, in today’s mainstream market of autotune and dance tracks, will Staind bring hard rock back to the top 40 like they did with “It’s Been Awhile?” Here’s the verdict on “Not Again.”

The Good;

Lead vocalist, Aaron Lewis, has a lower register than is striking and haunting. It really comes out on the verses with an aggressive and ominous sensitivity that delivers the lyrics with conviction.
For a hard rock song, the hook is surprisingly catchy. It’s one that can easily get stuck in your head, and you’ll be happy to throw your fist in the air and sing along to it. “Nooooot agaaaaain!”
Mike Mushok’s guitar solo is simply awesome, and shows some serious skill. In fact, the guitar playing is top notch through out the entire song.

The Bad;

Lewis shows his aggressive side by doing a bit of screaming in this song. Now, although I agree that it’s tastefully done in this song, I’m just not a fan of screaming in general. Still, because it is done particularly well, and in moderation, it’s a minor detail that doesn’t bother me too badly.
I became a fan of Staind for the style that was featured in low key, yet still dark and heavy tracks like “Its Been Awhile,” “Right Here,” and my personal favorite, “Epiphany.” This much heavier direction may very well be a throwback to their original style, but I much prefer the softer side of Staind. Nothing personal.

The Verdict; Good
I will openly admit some personal bias on this review. “Not Again” is an excellent hard rock song, but it isn’t quite my preference. Call me what you want, but I prefer the dark and haunting melodies of Break the Cycle and 14 Shades of Grey. Although Staind does excel at creating the heavier and more aggressive sound, I personally feel that their other sound was much more distinct and distinguishing. I’m still anxiously awaiting the full album, but I don’t see myself choosing this song over the rest of their discography.
